Conversion tips

As a Californian chef, I am used to cooking with non-metric units such as cups, tablespoons, ounce or Farhenheit, and it might sound very unfamiliar for you if you are not coming from the USA or Great Britain.

To avoid getting lost, here is what you need to remember to convert the Imperial measurement system into a metric system in a second.

How do I convert the units of measurement in a recipe?

For each measure, its equivalence! Overview of the different units of measurement for a smooth recipe.

The solid:

One ounce ( or / oz av) is equivalent to 28 grams

One pound (Ibis) corresponds to 453 grams

A stick of butter weighs 113 grams.

The liquid :

A quarter (qt) corresponds to a liter.

One ounce of liquid (fl oz) is equal to 30 milliliters.

One liquid pint or pint corresponds to 473 milliliters.

As for the dry pint, it represents 551 milliliters.

The cups:

1 cup of liquid = 250 ml

1 cup of flour = 128 gr

1 cup of white sugar = 201 gr

1 cup of brown sugar / American brown sugar = 220 gr

1 cup of butter = 227 gr

1 cup of brown sugar = 220 gr

1 cup of chocolate chips = 152 gr

1 cup of chopped walnuts = 122 gr

The spoons :

1 teaspoon (tsp) = 5 ml, or 1 coffee spoon

1 tablespoon (tblsp) = 15 ml, or 1 soup spoon

Easy, right?

Equip yourself for Imperial measurements

If you browse and cook a lot of North American recipes, it might be worth investing in a set of cups. For a rather affordable price, these little utensils will save a lot of time.

Note that everyday objects can also replace cups and spoons. A small mustard glass has the same capacity as a cup! As for the spoons, swap the teaspoon for a coffee spoon, and the tablespoon for a soup spoon.

Beware of heatstroke ...

The final word will come back to cooking. If French and most of the world swear by degrees Celsius, the United States uses Fahrenheit.

Thereby :

32 ° F correspond to 0 ° C

Simmering water equals 46 ° C, or 115 ° F Water boils 212 ° F

400° F equals 205° C
